Tensions are rising between the communities of Gunjur and Berending over a long-standing land dispute, with recent incidents raising fears of renewed violence.
The conflict, rooted in competing claims over land ownership and unclear boundary demarcations, has persisted for years, periodically flaring into confrontation between residents of the two neighbouring communities.
The situation escalated again on 22 March 2026, when a resident of Gunjur, Yaya Darboe, was reportedly injured during an alleged attack involving youths from Berending.
The incident has heightened tensions and revived memories of previous violence linked to the dispute, including the fatal shooting of Buba Jammeh.
Residents said grievances tied to land ownership, particularly among families from Darboe Kunda, Jammeh Kunda, and Jatta Kunda, have continued to fuel mistrust and confrontation, with concerns now growing over possible retaliatory actions.
Amid the rising tensions, the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding has issued a warning, describing the situation as a “dangerous escalation” that threatens lives and social cohesion.
WANEP said the dispute has moved beyond a land disagreement and now poses a serious risk to peace and stability in the Kombo South District.
The organisation urged the government to act swiftly to protect residents, fast-track the work of a recently established boundary demarcation task force, and enforce the law impartially. It also called for strengthened dialogue between the two communities to prevent further escalation.
WANEP further warned that planned demonstrations and rising frustration, particularly among young people, could inflame the situation if not carefully managed.
Residents, especially the youth, have been urged to exercise restraint, as efforts continue to find a peaceful and lasting solution to the dispute.
