Gambian civil servants will get pay rise in the new year after the government approved a new pay and grading system.

The new system will see thousands of civil servants particularly those on low pay get a much needed pay boost.

The government’s Personnel Management Office (PMO) made the announcement last Thursday and said the system will start next July (2022).

“This will help improve the current low pay and pension of civil servants, improve attraction of both managerial and technical talents required for improved service delivery; assist in retaining highly skilled and competent civil servants among others,” PMO said in a statement.

In April the Barrow government announcement a raft of measures to improve the living conditions of public sector workers.

The Vice President was tasked to oversee the process and the PMO with the support of U.K.-based consulting firm Public Administration International developed the new pay structure.
