Three people have died and one person is in a critical condition after a car crashed into a stationary police truck in Old Yundum, The Gambia.

The collision happened at around 07:00 local time near Jah Oil, opposite Indian Garden, as the police vehicle was reportedly dropping off a passenger at the roadside.

Police said a Golf vehicle travelling at speed from Old Yundum towards Sukuta struck the rear of the truck.

The driver of the car, Abdoulie Manneh, died at the scene along with two passengers. A fourth person was taken to Kanifing General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Authorities said the identities of three other passengers in the vehicle have not yet been confirmed.

Members of the public are being asked to assist in identifying the victims at Kanifing General Hospital.

An investigation into the crash is under way.
