Twelve Gambian journalists were celebrated in grand style Saturday night at the prestigious Union Awards, honouring excellence in journalism. The ceremony, held at the luxurious Sun Beach Hotel in Bakau, brought together media professionals, government representatives, and dignitaries to recognise the exceptional contributions of journalists across various categories.

The winners, who demonstrated outstanding skill and dedication in their reporting, were Yankuba Jallow, Mariam Sankanu, Maimuna Bah, Alieu Ceesay, Nyima Sillah, Momodou S. Jallow, Momodou Lamin Choi, Mam Nabou Kah, and Muhammed Lamin Drammeh. Their award-winning articles and reports spanned critical topics such as Investigative Reporting, Business, Migration and Trafficking, Health, Security, Agriculture, Sports, Tourism, Arts and Culture, Women’s Reporting, and Children’s Issues.

Speaking at the event, the President of the Gambia Press Union (GPU), Muhammed S. Bah underscored the importance of quality journalism in shaping public discourse and holding power to account.

“Tonight, we celebrate not just the journalists but the power of storytelling that impacts lives, drives change, and fosters accountability,” he said.

The awardees expressed gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the ethics of journalism.

The ceremony also featured keynote speeches, cultural performances, and networking opportunities, creating a memorable night for attendees. The GPU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting journalists through training and capacity building, ensuring they continue to produce impactful stories.

This year’s awards serve as a testament to the resilience and creativity of Gambian journalists, many of whom work in challenging conditions to inform and educate the public.
