Police in Basse have arrested two men in connection with suspected illegal wildlife activity in Yorobawol Village, raising concerns about poaching and the protection of endangered species.

The suspects, Kebba Danso, 41, of Wellingara, and Mamud Ceesay, 38, of Genjie Wollof, are currently assisting authorities with investigations.

Officers recovered several items believed to be linked to illegal hunting, including two single-barrel guns, nineteen rounds of ammunition, five slaughtered vultures, and a dead goat.

Additional equipment thought to have been used in trapping wildlife was also seized.

All items have been secured, and the men remain in police custody as investigations continue.

Police emphasised that the killing or possession of protected wildlife species is a serious criminal offence under Gambian law, carrying significant legal consequences.

Police described the arrests as part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal hunting, protect biodiversity, and preserve the ecological balance in the region.

They also urged members of the public to come forward with information that could assist the investigation.

Conservationists have expressed concern over the impact of illegal wildlife activities on vulnerable species, including vultures, which play a crucial role in the ecosystem by controlling disease and supporting food chains.

The authorities said the case would be thoroughly examined to determine whether the suspects acted alone or as part of a wider network involved in poaching.
