Activists have repatriated two Gambian girls trafficked to Oman to work as domestic maids.
The Foundation Against Trafficking and Irregular Migration (FATIM) said the girls arrived in Senegal on Saturday and will soon be reunited with families in Gambia.
The duo’s repatriation comes days after another group of about a dozen trafficked Gambian women and girls were rescued and returned home from the Middle Eastern country.
According to FATIM, the hard labour imposed on the women without enough rest has caused some health complications for most of them.
Others were subjected to sexual harassment among other abuses.
“This time FATIM was able to purchase [air tickets] for two girls and [they] will arrive in Dakar on the 18th June, whilst the National Agency Against Trafficking In Person (NAATIP) is facilitating the transportation from Dakar to Gambia. We will still continue to engage the government, organisations and individuals to assist in repatriating the rest of the girls,” the organisation said.
