Police have arrested two teachers following a deadly fire at a Quranic school in Sinchu Alagie, which claimed the life of 12-year-old student Abubacarr Mbacke.

The fire also left 11-year-old Muhammed Njie in critical condition at Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH).

The detained teachers, Alagie Jobe and Omar Cham, are being questioned as part of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

During the inquiry, Alagie Jobe admitted that the two boys had previously absconded from the Daara and were returned by their parents.

To prevent further attempts to flee, the boys were allegedly chained and locked inside the dormitory where the fire broke out.

Police have called on all Quranic schools to strengthen fire safety measures and prioritise the welfare and rights of children in their care.
