Police in Wellingara are probing the death of a one-month-old baby girl believed to have undergone female genital mutilation.

The infant reportedly experienced severe bleeding after the procedure and was taken to Bundung Maternal and Child Health Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

Two women are currently in custody as investigations continue.

The body has been moved to RVTH mortuary for post-mortem.

The Gambia Police Force has called on the public to report harmful practices and pledged to protect vulnerable people.
