The United Democratic Party (UDP) has  condemned remarks by agriculture minister, Dr Demba Sabally, who allegedly said he was prepared to “shed blood” to ensure President Adama Barrow’s victory in the 2026 elections.

In a statement, the party described the minister’s comments as “reckless” and “inflammatory”, accusing him of inciting violence and undermining The Gambia’s democratic principles.

“As a serving government minister, Sabally’s remarks are a direct threat to national stability,” the UDP said.

“Such rhetoric betrays the oath of office and undermines the peace that Gambians cherish.”

The party called on President Barrow to publicly denounce the remarks and hold the minister accountable.

It also urged the National Human Rights Commission and the Independent Electoral Commission to reject any attempts to normalise violence in politics.

The UDP appealed to the international community to take note of what it described as rising threats to democracy in The Gambia, and reiterated its commitment to peaceful and transparent elections in 2026.
