Ousainou Darboe

The United Democratic Party (UDP) has distanced itself from a series of audio recordings circulating on social media that contain derogatory remarks directed at Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) leader Hon. Mama Kandeh.

In a statement issued by its media team, the UDP said it “strongly disassociates” itself from the comments, adding that they do not reflect the party’s values or official position.

The party emphasised that any such statements whether made by individuals within or outside the UDP, are personal views and should not be attributed to the party.

Kandeh and Darboe

“Our party leader, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, has consistently held Hon. Mama Kandeh in high regard, not only as a fellow political leader but also because of the historical ties and mutual respect between their respective families,” the statement said.

The UDP called for that foundation of mutual respect to be upheld by all who speak in the party’s name.

The party also condemned what it described as “divisive rhetoric, tribal provocation, or personal attacks,” warning that such behaviour threatens the country’s social cohesion.

“Tribalism and hate speech have no place in our political discourse,” the UDP said, urging its supporters and the wider public to reject inflammatory narratives.
