The United Democratic Party (UDP) has been urged not to downplay the mass resignation of its members, which followed recent disagreements over the party’s flagbearer.

Momodou Cham, widely known as MC Cham Jnr, issued the warning, stressing the importance of respecting party members and democratic principles.

“What happened in the party is not right. If you call yourself a democratic party, then everyone should be able to participate, anyone can apply,” he said.

“A party that claims to embrace democracy cannot afford to disregard the views of its members or alienate those who are committed to its cause.”

He added that the resignations, particularly from the executive level, send a negative signal about the internal state of the party.

“We’ve seen many people resigning, and that reflects poorly on the party and unity. Loyalty cannot be demanded; it must be earned,” he said.

Drawing on his own political experience, he noted: “You can take an example from my time at the GDC. You cannot insult people or treat them unfairly and expect them to remain loyal. Respect and engagement are key to keeping members committed.”

Mr Cham’s remarks come at a time when political parties in the country are under close scrutiny for their internal dynamics and handling of disagreements.

He concluded by urging the UDP leadership to take the resignations seriously and address the concerns of members constructively, rather than dismissing them.
