The University of The Gambia Staff and Faculty Association (UTGFSA) has announced plans for an indefinite sit-down strike if the university authorities fail to reinstate two dismissed lecturers, Dr. Alieu Gibba and Associate Professor Matarr Njie.

The lecturers, dismissed earlier this month, were accused by university management of “peddling unfounded allegations in the media”. Both have since filed lawsuits against the university, claiming unlawful dismissal and seeking damages.

The UTGFSA has issued a stern ultimatum to the university’s management and governing council, demanding the immediate reinstatement of the two academics. The association has also called for the implementation of staff promotions and an independent review of the 2023 promotion recommendations.

At a press conference, Dr. Ensa Touray, president of the UTGFSA, emphasised the gravity of the situation.

“As our first line of action, we have provided the Labour Department with a 14-day notice and even attempted to negotiate the case of the two lecturers, but all efforts led to nothing,” he said.

“We too are capable of standing up and taking a position to safeguard our members, which is our primary responsibility

Dr. Touray reiterated that while the association is open to peaceful negotiations, any actions taken against its members must adhere to the law.

UTGFSA Secretary General, Yorro Njie, also addressed the gathering, detailing the key demands of the planned industrial action, set to begin on Monday, 2nd December.

He emphasised the need for reinstating the dismissed lecturers, implementing overdue staff promotions, and conducting an independent review of the 2023 promotion recommendations.

He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to safeguarding staff rights, welfare, and professional dignity. He stated that the association would vigorously pursue these resolutions during the planned industrial action.
