The Vice President of The Gambia, Mohammed B.S. Jallow, on Monday paid a historic visit to Spanish football club Sevilla FC, reinforcing the deep-rooted connection between the La Liga side and The Gambia through the legacy of Gambian football icon Alhaji Momodou Njie, widely known as Biri Biri.

During the high-level visit, Vice President Jallow met with Sevilla FC President José María del Nido Carrasco to explore potential avenues of cooperation between the club and the Gambian government.

Discussions centred on youth development, sports cooperation, and preserving the legacy of Biri Biri, a trailblazer in African football.
Biri Biri, who played for Sevilla in the 1970s, was the first African to don the club’s colours and is credited with paving the way for generations of African players in European football.

As part of the visit, the Vice President and his delegation toured the iconic Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium, where Biri Biri once thrilled fans and left an indelible legacy. The tour served as a moment of pride and reflection, underlining the cultural and sporting bonds between the two nations.
“This visit is not only about celebrating a shared football legend, but also about strengthening bilateral ties through sport and youth empowerment,” said Vice President Jallow.
The Gambian delegation thanked Sevilla FC for honouring Biri Biri’s memory and discussed opportunities for collaboration, including coaching exchanges, grassroots football programmes, and broader institutional partnerships.
The visit concluded with a symbolic exchange of gifts and a mutual commitment to deepening cooperation in sports and beyond.
