Vice-President Mohammed B.S. Jallow has co-chaired a high-level side event on the Rohingya crisis alongside Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The event, co-hosted by The Gambia and Bangladesh and supported by the US, UK, European Union, Türkiye, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia, focused on finding a durable solution to the prolonged displacement of Rohingya refugees.
Speaking at the event, Jallow reaffirmed The Gambia’s commitment to justice and accountability for crimes against the Rohingya and called for renewed international action to create conditions for their safe, voluntary and dignified return to Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
The Vice-President also highlighted The Gambia’s ongoing case against Myanmar before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), with participants stressing the importance of sustained international support for the proceedings and follow-up to the court’s forthcoming judgment.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman proposed five measures to address the crisis, including a credible roadmap for sustainable repatriation, protection of Rohingya rights and security, predictable humanitarian support, stronger justice and accountability, and greater regional cooperation against trafficking, drug networks and other transnational crimes.
Bangladesh currently hosts more than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees, while humanitarian funding for the crisis has come under increasing pressure.
The event brought together senior international representatives, including UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar Julie Bishop and President of the 81st UN General Assembly Khalilur Rahman.
