Police in Tallinding Farokono have arrested a 25-year-old woman accused of attempting to dump a newborn baby.

The suspect, identified as Isatou Jawneh of Farato, was brought to the local charge office on Sunday, August 24, 2025, by a crowd of residents who intervened after discovering the alleged act. She was accompanied by the infant.

Officers immediately rushed the baby to Kanifing General Hospital, where doctors pronounced the child dead on arrival.

During questioning, Jawneh admitted she was married but claimed the pregnancy was the result of a relationship with her boyfriend. Due to the size and unrest of the crowd that escorted her, police later transferred her to Bundung Police Station for safe custody.

The body of the infant has been transferred to the Banjul mortuary for preservation and a possible postmortem examination.

Police say investigations into the incident are ongoing.
