Ousainou Darboe

Yankuba Darboe, chairman of the Brikama Area Council and a senior figure in the United Democratic Party (UDP), has alleged that a faction within the party is plotting to remove its leader in what he described as an “overnight coup.”

In a strongly worded statement, Darboe accused unnamed party members of attempting to sow division and destabilise the UDP by exploiting ethnic tensions.

“They want to overthrow our party leader overnight with their illogical Mandinkaphobia! It’s not happening!” Darboe declared.

He further challenged those pushing for change to leave the party rather than undermine its leadership from within.

“If you hate Mandinka leadership of the UDP, form your own party and get your non-Mandinka leader. It’s called democracy!” he said.

Darboe’s comments have sparked debate within the UDP and beyond, as the party grapples with internal rifts ahead of upcoming political contests.
