The defendants: Yankuba Touray and FJC

The criminal case against Yankuba Touray and Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay was heard at the Banjul High Court on Tuesday a week after it was dismissed at the Kanifing Magistrate Court.

Touray and FJC are accused of conspiring to commit felony contrary to section 368 of the Criminal Code and interfering with potential TRRC witness contrary to section 36A of the TRRC Act. The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges and denied any wrongdoing.

The defence lawyers Lamin S. Camara and Abdoulie Sisoho both made an application for bail for their clients arguing that the charges are bailable.

Lawyer Sisoho told the court that Yankuba Touray is a farmer and travels throughout the country. He counselled the court to make an order that Touray can move throughout the country without any interference or resistance from any person or authority.

Justice Aminata Saho-Ceesay granted the defendants bail with conditions that remain within the jurisdiction of the court. The bail bond was set at D1 million and two Gambia sureties.

The case was adjourned to 8May for the prosecution to open its case.
