Thirty-nine members of the ECOMIG contingent in The Gambia have paid farewell to President Adama Barrow after ending their tour of duty in the country.

The 39 Gendarmes from the Senegalese contingent were also providing security to the president at State House in Banjul.

President Barrow hailed the professionalism of the unit during a farewell ceremony at State House on Monday. He thanked the gendarmes for their hard work and dedication to duty whilst in the country. .

The ECOMIG contingent in The Gambia is a regional intervention force deployed by ECOWAS to resolve the political impasse that emanated after the 2016 presidential election when the former president Yahya Jammeh was defeated by an
opposition coalition led by Adama Barrow.

The force is being tasked with managing the security of the country and providing protection for President Adama Barrow.
