Al Hikma University officially opened its doors today at Talinding Kunjang, Kanifing Municipality, marking a historic moment in The Gambia’s higher education sector.

The inauguration, presided over by President Adama Barrow, brings to fruition a long-standing vision of creating an institution that blends academic excellence with Islamic values, offering students a platform to grow intellectually, socially, and spiritually.

The new university is expected to serve as a beacon of knowledge and empowerment, fostering unity within the Islamic Ummah while addressing the growing need for specialised higher education in the country.

It is designed to cultivate critical thinking, leadership skills, and professional competence among students, preparing them to contribute meaningfully to national and regional development.

President Barrow, speaking in his capacity as Chairman of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), commended the Gambia Islamic Union and the OIC for their instrumental roles in establishing the university.

He emphasized that Al Hikma University will provide youth with opportunities to develop intellectual leadership, pursue innovative research, and participate in socio-economic transformation across OIC member states.

The event featured speeches from education experts, government officials, and community leaders, all of whom praised the government’s support in making the university a reality.

Observers noted that the institution aligns with The Gambia’s National Madrassah Integration Strategy (GMIS) and the Education Sector Policy 2016–2030, reinforcing a national commitment to inclusive, high-quality, and value-driven education.

Residents and education stakeholders described the university as a milestone for the country, highlighting its potential to attract regional and international students, create employment opportunities, and strengthen academic collaboration across the Islamic world.
