A man accused of killing teacher and youth leader Yunusa Mbye has been formally charged with murder and remanded at Mile 2 Central Prison pending his appearance before the High Court.
The accused, identified as Momodou Ba, also known as “Area,” appeared before the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday in connection with the fatal stabbing of Mbye in Fajara.
According to the charge sheet, Jallow is facing one count of murder contrary to Section 155 of the Criminal Offences Act 2025.
Prosecutors allege that on 15 June 2026, he stabbed Yunusa Mbye in the neck with a bottle in Fajara, Kanifing Municipality, causing injuries that later resulted in Mbye’s death.
The case was mentioned before Magistrate Sallah Mbaye, who ruled that the offence is beyond the jurisdiction of the Magistrates’ Court to try.
Consequently, the court ordered that Jallow be remanded at Mile 2 Central Prison and directed that the matter be transferred to the High Court, where he will face prosecution on the murder charge.
The charging of the suspect comes amid widespread public outrage over Mbye’s death, which has sparked an outpouring of grief across the country.
Mbye, a teacher, student leader and youth activist from Bansang, was widely regarded as a promising young leader whose death has drawn calls for swift justice from political figures, civil society groups and ordinary Gambians.
