A seven-month-old baby abducted during a journey from Barra to Banjul has been safely rescued after swift action by the Police, leading to the arrest of a teenage suspect.

The incident happened on Sunday, January 25, when the child’s mother was travelling to Banjul in a commercial vehicle. During the journey, she briefly stepped away and entrusted her baby to a fellow female passenger.

Moments later, she returned to find both the passenger and her infant missing, triggering panic and an immediate report to the Banjul Police Station.

Police launched a rapid search operation, activating alerts and coordinating follow-ups across communities.

Less than 24 hours later, on Monday, January 26, officers traced the suspect to Ebo Town, where a 17-year-old girl was arrested in possession of the missing child.

The baby was recovered unharmed, taken for medical checks as a precaution, and later reunited with the relieved mother.

Police confirmed that the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue in line with child-justice procedures.

The Gambia Police Force praised the public for their vigilance and cooperation, while renewing calls on parents and guardians to remain cautious when travelling with children, especially in public transport and crowded places.
