President Adama Barrow has promised to increase the pay of alkalis by 75 per cent after the election, saying he will fulfil the pledge “by God’s grace”.

Speaking at his rally in Farafenni tonight, Barrow said he had made the promise to alkalis and would honour it after the election.

“I have promised the alkalis that after the election, I will increase their pay to 75 per cent. By God’s grace, I will do that for them,” Barrow said.

The President made the pledge while addressing supporters at the rally as he campaigns ahead of the December 5 presidential election.

Barrow did not provide further details on the proposed increase or specify when the new pay structure would take effect.

Alkalis serve as traditional community leaders and play an important role in local affairs across The Gambia.

The promise forms part of Barrow’s campaign message as he seeks support ahead of the presidential election.

His Farafenni address also included appeals for unity among members and supporters of his political alliance as the campaign intensifies.
