The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has intercepted 11 people suspected of preparing to embark on an irregular migration journey in Batokunku, West Coast Region.

The interception was carried out by the GID’s Border Patrol Unit in Tanji on Friday, 26 September, during an enforcement operation.

The group comprises eight Gambian nationals — five men and three women — and three Senegalese men.

GID also arrested a 26-year-old Malian national, Madi Camara, who is suspected of facilitating the planned journey.

The 11 individuals and Camara remain in custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the planned migration attempt.

The GID said it remains committed to combating irregular migration and protecting vulnerable people from the dangers associated with irregular migration routes.
