President Adama Barrow has told lawmakers that he has instructed the Ministry of Justice to table a new draft constitution to parliament.

Barrow made the revelation today (15 September) in his state of the nation (SoNA) address.

The last parliament rejected a draft constitution after several pro-Barrow National Assembly members rejected it over term limits.

“As the constitution remains a top priority, my government is determined to oversee the drafting of a new constitution for The Gambia.

“Therefore, the Ministry of Justice will resume work towards tabling the draft constitution before this august assembly. As part of its mandate, the ministry will continue leading,” he said.

The draft constitution, which cost millions of dalasis to produce, was described as progressive and had the support of a large section of the Gambian population.
