President Adama Barrow has approved the promotion of three senior commanders of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) to higher military ranks.

The promotions, approved by President Barrow in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, took effect on August 4, 2026.

Chief of Defence Staff Major General Ousman Gomez has been promoted to Lieutenant General, while his deputy, Brigadier General Sait Njie, has been elevated to Major General.

Colonel Alagie Sanneh, Commander of the Republican National Guard, has been promoted to Brigadier General.

The promotions come shortly after the three officers were appointed to their respective senior command positions within the GAF.

The decision was made pursuant to the powers vested in the President by the Constitution of The Gambia, which gives the Commander-in-Chief authority over the Armed Forces.

Lieutenant General Gomez will continue to serve as Chief of Defence Staff, with Major General Njie as his deputy. Brigadier General Sanneh will continue to lead the Republican National Guard.

In a statement, the GAF congratulated the three commanders on their promotions and wished them success in their respective positions.
