President Adama Barrow has been urged to nominate at least a person with disability to the National Assembly.

The newly elected national assembly members are expected to have their swearing-in ceremony tomorrow in Banjul.

Lamin Sonko, a sign language interpreter and disability rights advocate, told Gambiana that: “we were all hoping to see at least one Person with Disability (PWD) nominated to the Parliament by you [President Barrow] to represent the entire PWD fraternity in our beloved country, The Gambia.

“Unfortunately, we did not see even one among the list of five nominees. We knew you are inclusive and have PWDs at heart this is why the PWD’s Bill has now become an Act. As the slogan ‘NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US’.  H.E., I am appealing for you to appoint a National Persons with Disability Adviser.  I know you have the good heart, so do that for the entire PWDs fraternity.”

This call comes amid reports that President Barrow had already nominated five members including the defeated national assembly member for Talinding, Fatoumatta Jawara.
