Kanifing Magistrates’ Court has charged Sainabou Mbye with manslaughter over the death of baby Muhammed.

Ms Mbye was extradited from Dakar last week after a leak audio of her explaining how baby Muhammed died.

Baby Muhammed was the son of Ms Mbye’s younger sister who was allegedly raped by her ex-husband Bubacar Keita in 2019 resulting in a pregnancy.

Mr Keita, who denied any wrongdoing, is facing trial at the high court.

Baby Muhammed was at the centre of the rape trial and earlier this month the presiding judge ordered a DNA paternity test to determine the baby’s biological father.

Keita’s lawyer has asked the court to set aside the DNA test injunction as the child is deceased and that the state had ample time to have done the test.

The judge will make a ruling tomorrow (27 July) on DNA test injunction.

Bob Keita’s rape trial has attracted a huge following due to the dramatic nature of the case and the long delays that many seen as “unjust”.

It has divided Gambians both at home and abroad as the trial plays out on social media.
