President Adama Barrow has dismissed growing talk of an opposition coalition ahead of the 2026 presidential election, declaring that no alliance of political parties can stop his re-election bid.
Addressing an NPP rally in Brikama, Barrow said coalition discussions being championed by opposition figures would not alter the outcome of the next election.
“There will be no coalition because everything that was rejected now had already been agreed upon in 2016,” he said.
The president was responding to recent comments from opposition politicians advocating a united front against the NPP.
Barrow said he had listened to arguments suggesting larger parties should lead coalition arrangements while smaller parties follow, but insisted such calculations would not threaten his political future.
“Whether big or small parties come together, President Barrow will still defeat them,” he declared to cheers from supporters.
He also described the upcoming election as unprecedented, noting that several former vice presidents are expected to contest against him.
“The 2026 election will be one of a kind in Gambian history because four former vice presidents will be challenging me,” he said.
Barrow added that he was not intimidated by the prospect, arguing that he knows the strengths and weaknesses of many of his potential challengers because they previously served in his administration.
