A wave of criticism has erupted against controversial National People’s Party (NPP) supporter Mama Jabbie after a viral video surfaced in which she appeared to call for harsh measures against prominent Islamic scholar Abdoulie Fatty, prompting some Gambians to demand police action.
In the video circulating on social media, Mama Jabbie is heard suggesting that Imam Fatty should be subjected to treatment similar to punishments reportedly used by the military authorities in Burkina Faso against religious figures accused of inciting unrest.
“You take Imam Fatty and train him. An Imam who wants to destabilise a country as he wants to make himself like Ousainou Darboe. An elderly person to say something that is not true,” she said in the recording.
The remarks have since sparked outrage online, with critics describing them as inflammatory, disrespectful and potentially constituting hate speech.
Many commentators questioned whether authorities would investigate the comments if they had been made by an opposition supporter.
One critic wrote: “My ask is simple, is she above the law or is it that the law just belongs to some? We need to respect one another. Disrespect and insults against our elders should be considered seriously.”
Another commenter urged restraint, saying: “My sister, if I were you, I would stop the hate speech.”
Others were more direct in their condemnation.
“Mama Jabbie, this life is three days. Yesterday, today and tomorrow. Whatever you do or say today will be brought back to you tomorrow,” one person wrote.
Another added: “This stupid idiot is too much now. She needs to stop.”
Some also accused law enforcement of applying double standards.
“In my own view, the Gambia Police Force are afraid to invite Mama Jabbie for questioning simply because she’s a loyal supporter of President Barrow,” one commenter claimed.
Another questioned whether equal treatment under the law exists, arguing that had similar remarks been directed at an NPP figure, arrests would likely have followed.
As criticism continues to mount, neither Mama Jabbie nor the authorities have publicly responded to the growing calls for action.
