Ousainou Darboe, leader of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), is pushing to get a proper burial for murdered politician Ebrima Solo Sandeng.

The late Sandeng was a senior UDP party official who was killed in state custody in 2016 after he was arrested for holding a protest calling for electoral reforms.

“We will talk to Solo’s lawyers to see if we get his dead body for proper burial. We want to give him burial like any other Muslim,” Darboe said.

“They buried him like a dog. But for us, we want to give him a proper Muslim burial.”

He described the late Mr Sandeng as a “good Muslim” adding “this is observed even during our UDP tours”.

Darboe’s comments come five days after seven former security officers were sentenced to death for killing Solo Sandeng.

The convicts included Yankuba Badjie, ex-director of the NIA, Sheikh Omar Jeng, the ex-director of NIA operations, Baboucarr Sallah, Tamba Masirreh and Lamin Darboe.
