Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, leader of United Democratic Party, has said other political party members betrayed Ebrima Solo Sandeng while addressing a memorial lecture in honour of the slain politician.
Ebrima Solo Sandeng died while in the custody of the now defunct National Intelligence Agency in 2016 following his arrest with other members of UDP for staging a peaceful march to call for electoral reform.
Lawyer Darboe, who was also jailed by the Jammeh regime for also leading a march calling for the release of the late Sandeng while in detention, took to the podium at the memorial lecture to pay a somber tribute to the deceased.
He described him as the country’s Steve Biko for dying in the course to liberate The Gambia from dictatorial rule.
“He [Solo Sandeng] went out on the basis of an agreement with other people who belong to other political parties and stakeholders. On reaching Banjul Pharmacy all other fizzle away, except Solo Sandeng and few members of United Democratic Party, Nogoi Njie, Fatou Camara, Fatoumatta Jawara, Falang Sonko, Babucarr Gitteh.
“But all other politicians who had agreed among themselves that they would be there abandoned the enterprise. Solo took the lead and ultimately he died,” he said.
