Ousainu Darboe has raised concern over what he describes as a growing wave of crime and insecurity in The Gambia, warning that armed robberies, burglaries and other violent crimes are leaving many citizens living in fear.

Darboe said the worsening security situation requires urgent government intervention, arguing that the protection of lives and property remains one of the state’s most fundamental responsibilities.

“Across the country, many families no longer feel safe in their homes. Citizens are increasingly worried about their personal safety and the protection of their property,” the statement said.

Darboe called on the government to strengthen law enforcement, improve intelligence gathering, increase police visibility and ensure security agencies are adequately equipped to combat crime.

The UDP leader said security sector reform would be a key pillar of his 2026 presidential agenda under the banner “One Term. One Mission. National Renewal.”

According to Darboe, a UDP government would modernise and professionalise the country’s security services, strengthen community policing, improve the welfare and training of security personnel, enhance intelligence capabilities and promote accountability and respect for the rule of law.

“The safety and security of our people cannot be compromised. A secure Gambia is essential for economic growth, social stability and national development,” the statement added.
