
The death of Yunusa Mbye, a teacher, student leader and political activist from Bansang, has sparked an outpouring of grief across The Gambia, with many describing his passing as a tragic loss to the country’s youth.
Mbye died following an alleged stabbing incident in Fajara on Monday. Police have since launched an investigation and taken a suspect into custody as inquiries continue.
Tributes have poured in from political figures, youth groups, former colleagues and social media users, many of whom remembered him as a passionate advocate for young people and national development.
The Unite Movement for Change (UMC), where Mbye was an active member of the Students’ Wing, described him as a “beloved student leader and party patriot,” saying his death had left the movement and the wider community devastated. The party also called for a thorough investigation and justice for the deceased.
Across social media platforms, Gambians expressed shock and sadness over the circumstances surrounding his death.
Many described Mbye as a promising young leader whose commitment to public service and youth empowerment had earned him admiration beyond political lines.
Others raised concerns about rising incidents of violence involving young people, urging authorities and communities to strengthen efforts in conflict resolution and crime prevention.
Former colleagues and university associates also recalled Mbye’s role in student leadership, highlighting his contributions to youth advocacy and civic engagement during his time at the University of The Gambia.
Several online commentators called for swift justice, insisting that the circumstances surrounding the incident must be fully investigated to provide answers to his family and the public.
The death has resonated strongly in Bansang, where residents continue to mourn one of their sons, with messages of condolence flooding social media.
As investigations continue, Yunusa Mbye is being remembered not only as a teacher and activist, but also as a young Gambian whose life ended suddenly, leaving behind unfulfilled ambitions and a grieving community.
