The resignation of former Chief of Defence Staff Mamat O.A. Cham has sparked public debate in The Gambia over whether former army officer General Musa Savage should be reinstated to a senior position within the Gambia Armed Forces.

Some commentators have said General Savage should be brought back as Deputy Chief of Defence Staff, arguing that his experience, training and leadership skills remain valuable to the country.

One commentator said Savage should be reinstated, describing him as a highly trained and experienced officer whose services would benefit the military.

The commentator said he was also a victim of circumstances during the former administration of President Yahya Jammeh and should not be judged solely on events beyond his control.

Another commentator said The Gambia should continue to promote reconciliation and national unity by allowing experienced professionals to contribute to state-building.

The commentator said Savage represented a generation of trained officers whose expertise could be useful in strengthening national institutions.

The commentator added that the country had invested significantly in his military training and leadership development and should continue to benefit from that investment.

However, other commentators have opposed any possible return, pointing to his alleged conduct during the 2016–2017 political impasse following the presidential election.

One commentator said Savage had refused to recognise President Adama Barrow as the elected leader at the time, arguing that this raised concerns about his suitability for a senior command role.

The commentator said appointing him could pose risks to national security and undermine ongoing security sector reforms.

The commentator also warned against placing sensitive military responsibilities in the hands of individuals perceived to have political loyalties.

Instead, the commentator suggested that attention should be given to experienced serving officers within the Gambia Armed Forces, including officers such as Seedy Joof, who was described as a veteran instructor with both national and international experience.

Another commentator said focus should remain on senior officers already serving in the military.

“Where are our senior officers in the Army? Are they not capable of running our Army?” the commentator said.

No official statement has been issued regarding any possible reinstatement of General Musa Savage.
