Citizens Alliance (CA) leader Dr Ismailia Ceesay has questioned the competence of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to conduct the presidential election in December.

He made the claim at a press conference as the party attempts to kickstart its election campaign days a court ruling.

Dr Ceesay this week won a high court case against the electoral commission after being disqualified from contesting the election.

The IEC was found to have violated the country’s electoral laws.

He said:The IEC is acting in bad faith, they are discriminatory and we have very little faith and trust in them. Their action is spiteful and vindictive and we cannot accept it.

“They are vehemently bent on depriving us of running for the 4th December Election. But they cannot stop us. As a matter of fact, we shall start our campaign on Sunday.”

Dr Ceesay warned that the IEC  has “the potential to derail the electoral process and undermine the peace and stability of the Gambia if not checked.”

He claimed that the IEC chairman Alhaji Momar Njai “is weak and does not seem to be in charge of the institution”.
