Dr Ismaila Ceesay, leader of the opposition Citizens Alliance, has hit out at Gambians  supporting the military coup in Niger.

He made the condemnation while speaking on Giss Giss, a current affairs talk show.

Dr Ceesay said any Gambian praying for a coup in the country doesn’t deserve to be a Gambian.

“Unfortunately here in The Gambia, we have politicised everything. Death, marriage, naming ceremony, it’s everything that has been politicised, to the extent there are people praying for a coup in this country. But anybody thinking like that is not even supposed to be a Gambian. We should take our passport from you,”he said.

“I want to condemn in the strongest terms coup d’etat whether Niger, Burkina Faso, Guinea Conakry and wherever one is planning a coup.

“Coup d’etat is a thing of the past. It’s people who legitimise coup whenever it happens. But people do not know. In 1992, I was in Freetown when the coup happened. Valentine Strasser was 28 years old. The stadium was filled to capacity in his first outing.

“How did that end? They destroyed that country. In Liberia when Samuel Doe took over, everybody came out to suppprt the coup. How did that also end? He destroyed  Liberia. In Central African Republic it was Bozize. In 1994 it was The Gambia. So people coming out is not because they support coup but because of ignorance of what awaits them,” he added.
