Lawmakers are all seated in preparation to debate on the much-awaited Draft Constitution of The Gambia. 

This is the first reading of the bill that will promulgate the Constitution of The Republic of The Gambia 2020 and repeal the 1997 Constitution.

The Draft Constitution was submitted to the government several months ago by the Constitutional Review Commission following a two year consultative meetings with every strata of the Gambian society. 

However the government’s delay in presenting the draft constitution to parliament was attributed to the coronavirus pandemic. 

On September 2 the Justice Minister told state broadcaster GRTS that the draft constitution was gazette on August 28 and would be presented to the National Assembly second week in September.
