Former Gambia Democratic Party (GPDP) Youth President Adama John has officially defected to the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), declaring his support for President Adama Barrow and the government’s national development agenda.

John announced his decision in a public statement addressed to Gambians, describing his move as a personal commitment to what he called the President’s vision for a “developed Gambia.”
“I have joined the National People’s Party to support President Adama Barrow’s vision for a developed Gambia,” John said.

He said he was convinced that the NPP’s agenda is focused on progress, unity and tangible development, adding that he believes national growth requires collective effort beyond political differences.

John highlighted key areas such as education, agriculture, infrastructure and national advancement as priorities he believes should unite Gambians, noting that these sectors remain central to the government’s development programme.

“I believe in his leadership and agenda for progress… Let us work together towards a brighter future,” he added.

John’s decision comes amid continued political realignments in the country, as youth leaders and former opposition figures increasingly shift towards the ruling party.

Political observers say such movements reflect the evolving dynamics of Gambian politics, particularly as the NPP works to consolidate support across different segments of society ahead of future political engagements.

While the GPDP has not yet issued an official response to John’s departure, his defection is expected to further spark debate about youth influence, party loyalty and the future direction of opposition politics in The Gambia.
