The Gambia Police Force has given its account of the unrest in Mandinary on Friday, September 26, which followed the death of Omar Badjie.
Police said a patrol team encountered a group of young men suspected of smoking prohibited substances.
As they fled, Badjie collapsed and was rushed to Kanifing General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
His death triggered violent attacks on officers and the Mandinary Police Post.
“The situation escalated further as officers on duty and even off-duty personnel passing through the community, such as PC 9728 Assan Jallow of the Anti-Crime Unit, were subjected to assault causing serious bodily harm,” police said.
Reinforcements from the Police Intervention Unit in Brikama, later supported by units from Kanifing, were deployed.
Community leaders, including the Alkalo and Village Development Committee, were engaged.
Tear gas was used to disperse rioters who had blocked roads and set tires ablaze, after which calm was restored.
Twelve officers sustained serious injuries, and the Mandinary Police Post suffered extensive damage.
Nineteen people, including minors, have been arrested in connection with the disturbances.
“The Gambia Police Force extends condolences to the family of the late Omar Badjie and assures the public that the circumstances of his death will be investigated diligently,” the statement said.
