The Gambia government has recalled its ambassador and deputy head of mission to Cuba after a disgraceful fistfight incident.

Ambassador Sheikh Tijan Hydara and Deputy Head of Mission, Vincent Mendy are reported to have engaged in a shameful fistfight inside the Gambian Embassy in Havana, Cuba.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad has issued a statement announcing that “the Government of The Gambia recall H.E Ambassador Sheikh Tijan Hydara and the Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Vincent Mendy from their respective positions at the Gambian Embassy in Havana, Cuba. These recalls take effect immediately.

“The two diplomats have been involved in an unfortunate incident at their duty station in Cuba and initial findings and available evidence confirmed that their actions are inconsistent with diplomatic norms consequently they have both lost the integrity and privilege to continue representing The Gambia as diplomats.

“When a diplomat involves him or herself in certain acts, behaviors or is found to be in breach of the diplomatic code of conduct, the State’s first course of action is disciplinary.”
