The Gambian passport has been ranked 64th globally in 2026, retaining its position as the most powerful passport in West Africa, according to the latest Henley Passport Index.
The ranking places The Gambia ahead of all other West African countries in terms of travel freedom, with Gambian passport holders able to access over 70 destinations visa-free or with visa-on-arrival.
Henley’s index, which ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can enter without a prior visa, highlights The Gambia’s comparatively strong mobility despite growing global travel restrictions.
The country’s position reflects long-standing diplomatic ties and visa-waiver agreements, particularly within Africa, the Caribbean and parts of Asia, supporting travel for business, education and tourism.
While a significant gap remains between African passports and top-ranked global travel documents, analysts say The Gambia’s ranking demonstrates relative strength within the region and offers a platform for further mobility gains through expanded diplomatic engagement.
