Hundreds of Gambians have taken to social media to pay their last respect to US-based Gambian journalist Pa Nderry MBai who died last night in the United States of America.

The late Mbai, who began his journalism career with the defunct Daily Observer and The Point Newspaper before he left for US in 2004, is being widely praised for his uncompromised journalistic works.

US-based Gambian activist Pa Samba Jow said the late Mr MBai “was extremely effective in demystifying Jammeh. In fact, Pa was the TRRC well before there was one through his radio and website, he brought us news about Jammeh’s excesses without fear.”

“Every tyrant survives on mystification, and to defeat them requires demystifying them. This was what Pa Nderry Mbai was able to achieve. Pa was one person that couldn’t be bought.

“He was uncompromising to a fault. There is no one he was afraid of pissing off. I have had many fights and disagreements with him, but who didn’t? He will always call irrespective of how late or early it was- when Pa wanted the news, he saw no obstacles,” he added.

Fatu Camara, CEO of The Fatu Network also said: “honestly my brother, I have no idea what to say or where to start. I sent you a text this evening at 8:07pm Gambia time checking if you are ok cause you haven’t updated your Facebook page since November 12th. Ya Allah please forgive Pa Ndery’s shortcomings and grant him the highest Jannah.”

Momodou Musa Touray, founder and managing editor of Gambiana says “this is a sad loss for Gambia and Gambian journalism. Pa Nderry was the face and voice of Gambian journalism for many decades. A consummate journalist who did his work without fear or ill will. He was the best among us.”

Activist Kejau Touray said: “RIP old friend, you did your part for the struggle and for your country. May we all find it in our hearts to pray for and forgive Mr. Pa Nderry MBai for any shortcomings. May God grant him eternal Jannah and punish those who tried to corrupt him. Amen.”

Banka Manneh added: “may Jannah be your final resting place Pa Nderry MBai ! You gave the cause of securing our freedom your all, heaven is beaming with excitement receiving you my dear brother. Sleep well, Jambarr nga!”
