The Gambia’s health ministry has come under public backlash for advising people to always protect themselves with condoms during sex.

The ministry posted condoms on its social media site to advise people to protect themselves and their partners against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and unwanted pregnancies.

According to the ministry, it is time to talk about the importance of safe sex practices and the responsible use of condoms.

“Remember, practicing safe sex doesn’t only provide protection against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and unwanted pregnancies, but it also fosters emotional well-being, stronger and healthier relationships. Let’s create a culture where safe sex is seen as a responsible and non-negotiable aspect of our lives,” the ministry said

However, this ministry’s statement has been condemned by some section of the society calling it “unreligious and uncultured”, while others accused the ministry of encouraging sex before marriage.

“Let’s be truthful to ourselves, this country is a religious country of Muslims and Christians, and in both doctrines it is a sin to have sex out of wedlock. That being said, the proper way to address all these challenges listed is to advise the population to refrain from fornication and adultery and not encourage them in disguise (because that’s what this is) to sin but to play it safe. It did not help other nations and it will not help us,” one of the critics said.

“Advise [them] to get married. And stop this nonsense,” another added.
