On this Day in 1965:
The Gambia became the 37th sovereign state in Africa and the last of Britain’s West African colonies to gain independence. 

The Union Jack was lowered for the last time and replaced with the red, white, blue and green of the Gambian national flag. 

The day marked the end of Britain’s occupation of The Gambia that started in 1765.
