Demba Sabally has criticised Yankuba Darboe over comments suggesting that sacrifice is needed for peace in the country, accusing him of lacking credibility.
Sabally said he was reacting to remarks attributed to Darboe in which he reportedly stated that “someone has to die” for the country to achieve peace.
“I heard Chairman Yankuba Darboe said someone has to die for the country to be peaceful,” Sabally said.
“When we needed men and people who would die in this country, he, Yankuba Darboe, ran away and left the country.”
He went on to contrast Darboe’s record with those who remained in The Gambia during the political transition.
“We faced Yahya Jammeh and defeated him while we remained in the country,” he added.
“If he’s pretending to be a man today, that is below what President Adama Barrow did.”
The comments reflect rising political tensions, with figures from different sides exchanging sharp rhetoric ahead of upcoming electoral processes.
There has been no immediate response from Darboe regarding Sabally’s remarks.
