The Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Bo Li, has commended The Gambia for its economic progress over the past seven years, citing the satisfactory implementation of IMF-supported programmes.

Mr. Li made the remarks during a courtesy visit to President Adama Barrow at the State House in Banjul.

His visit is aimed at strengthening engagement with Gambian authorities, whom he described as demonstrating strong commitment to macroeconomic stability and structural reforms.

The IMF official acknowledged the country’s efforts in maintaining economic discipline and advancing reforms under ongoing programmes, noting that such progress reflects the government’s dedication to sound economic management.

Responding to the IMF’s assessment, President Barrow reaffirmed his government’s commitment to fiscal discipline and the use of digital systems to improve transparency and curb corruption.

He stressed that enhancing domestic revenue mobilisation remains a key priority for his administration.

The President also called on the IMF to continue supporting The Gambia’s development agenda, while emphasising that the primary responsibility for national development lies with Gambians themselves.

He further highlighted the importance of the government’s social contract with citizens, respect for institutional frameworks, and the critical role of the private sector in driving economic growth.

According to him, sustained economic progress must be supported by national security and stability to ensure the success of social programmes.

President Barrow also underscored the need for peace and stability, describing them as essential pillars for long-term development and prosperity in the country.

The visit comes as The Gambia works towards completing its second IMF-supported programme by the end of the year, with plans already in place to transition into a new programme.
