The Kanifing Magistrates Court on Monday convicted sixteen drivers for violating the government’s order on social distancing put in place to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. 

The drivers were convicted and fined D5,000 each for overloading their vehicles with passengers in contravention of the government public health emergency order.

Last month the government issued a decree ordering all commercial drivers to only allow half of the number of passengers they are licensed to carry.

The convicted drivers were Alhagie Basiru Jallow, Tijan Jeng, Muhammed Susu, Lamin Saidy Leigh, Saikou Bah, Ousman Fofana, Sambou Jobe, Lamin Fatty, Momodou Alieu Kinteh, Ousman Touray, Kawsu Sawaneh, Essa Jeng, Banna Saho, Oumar Touray, Fabakary Bajo and Basiru Secka.
