Gambian rapper and activist Killa Ace shouted “no one’s father owns this country” at Kanifing Magistrates’ Court after being remanded to Mile Two Prison on Monday.
He was among 23 youths arrested last Friday during protests against the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority’s (PURA) new data price floor.
Police described the demonstration as “unlawful.”
The group faces charges of unlawful assembly, which they denied in court.

Their case has been adjourned to 4 September 2025 for hearing.
Killa Ace, whose real name is Ali Cham, yelled the slogan in Wolof as police officers in riot gear escorted him into a prison van.
Tensions flared outside the courthouse when supporters attempted to block the vehicle’s departure.
Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, leaving several people injured, including prominent human rights activist Madi Jobarteh, who later received hospital treatment.
Killa Ace is a well-known campaigner against injustice and has long used his music to highlight the frustrations of marginalised communities, especially young people.
He was one of the leading voices of opposition against the Jammeh dictatorship.
