Farmers across the length and breadth of The Gambia are worried that their crops will be affected by the lack of rain.

This year’s rainy season commenced with hope but subsequently halted due to low rainfall.

It only rained twice in many parts of the country which has worried farmers.

Speaking to farmers in the North of the country, Adama Ndow told Gambiana that they are worried about the situation as their crops might get destroy by shortage of rain.

Mr Ndow, the breadwinner of his family, depends on his farm to take care of the needs of his family.

“We can’t do anything about the situation but it is really affecting us,” he said.

Another farmer, Saikou Sonko said “our groundnuts are about to decay in the soil” as he expressed worried about the situation.

Meanwhile, in 2008 similar low rainfall and drought hit the country affecting both crops and animals.

A shortage of grass compelled livestock owners cutting the leaves of trees to feed their animals.

Agricultural experts urged farmers to find alternative crops for farming purpose as climate change keeps affecting the Globe.

The Gambia is a country where 60 percent of its population depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.
