Human rights activist Madi Jobarteh has blasted the government’s proposed accreditation of journalists, describing the justification behind it as “baseless and disingenuous.”
Reacting to comments by Information Minister Dr Ismaila Ceesay, Jobarteh rejected the argument that journalists need official press cards to carry out their work or receive protection from the state.

“The reasons Ismaila Ceesay is giving for accreditation of journalists are baseless and disingenuous. Journalists do not need a press card to cover a political rally or a protest or a workshop or for protection by the State. The State must protect all,” he said.
Jobarteh warned that linking journalists’ ability to operate to state-issued accreditation could set a dangerous precedent and undermine press freedom.
The proposal has sparked debate among media stakeholders and civil society groups, with concerns growing over its potential impact on independent journalism in The Gambia.
